Your driving policy.
Our help getting it set up.
You'll need an active auto insurance policy that covers rideshare or delivery work before you pick up the car. Most of our drivers get a non-owner's policy — takes about 15 minutes online and usually runs $50–150/month.
What you actually need
The 30-second version.
A current auto insurance policy that:
- Lists you as the named insured
- Covers rideshare and delivery use — this matters; most standard personal policies exclude it
- Meets Maryland / DC / Virginia minimum liability requirements
That's it. If you have it, you're ready to apply. If you don't, the next section is where most of our drivers start.
Where to get a policy
There are two main paths. Most Clock In drivers take the first one.
Non-owner's policy
A non-owner's policy covers you while you're driving any car you don't own — including a Clock In rental. It's typically cheaper than full auto insurance because it doesn't cover a vehicle you own.
Carriers our drivers commonly use:
| Carrier | Notes | Get a quote |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Auto | Most common choice for our drivers. ~$60–100/month. Quick online quote. | directauto.com |
| Bristol West | Specialty / non-standard market. Good for drivers with limited credit history. | bristolwest.com |
| National General | Similar to Bristol West. Broad coverage options. | nationalgeneral.com |
| Acceptance Insurance | Specialty market, often available with same-day issue. | acceptanceinsurance.com |
When you get a quote, tell the agent you'll be using the policy while renting a vehicle for rideshare or delivery work. Make sure rideshare/delivery use is included.
Major carrier with rideshare endorsement
If you already have a personal auto policy with a major carrier, you can usually add a rideshare endorsement for $15–30/month on top of your base premium.
| Carrier | Product | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| State Farm | Rideshare Driver Coverage endorsement | statefarm.com |
| Progressive | Rideshare endorsement | progressive.com/auto/rideshare-insurance |
| Geico | Rideshare insurance | geico.com/auto-insurance/rideshare-insurance |
What Clock In covers (and what your policy covers)
We keep physical damage and liability coverage on the vehicle itself — meaning the car is protected as our property.
Your policy covers you while you're behind the wheel. If something happens during a trip, the claim is filed first against your non-owner's policy or rideshare endorsement.
This is standard practice for week-to-week gig rentals. It keeps your rate lower (you're not paying for commercial insurance baked into a higher weekly price) and keeps the structure clean if there's ever a claim.
Frequently asked
I've never had a non-owner's policy. Is it complicated?
No — it's actually simpler than full auto insurance. Most drivers complete the application in 15 minutes online and have proof of coverage emailed the same day.
Will Clock In help me pick a carrier?
Yes. Text us at (240) 203-9302 with your situation and we'll point you to the carrier that usually works best for someone like you. We can't sell insurance, but we know the landscape.
What if I get the policy and then change my mind about renting?
Most non-owner's policies are month-to-month and can be canceled or paused. Direct Auto and Bristol West both allow this.
Can I use a friend's or family member's policy?
No. The policy has to list you as the named insured.
How do I prove coverage at pickup?
Bring a digital or printed copy of your declarations page (your policy summary). We'll verify it before handing over the keys.
